{"id":2560,"date":"2012-08-20T09:05:43","date_gmt":"2012-08-19T23:05:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.belly.net.au\/?p=2560"},"modified":"2012-08-20T19:12:30","modified_gmt":"2012-08-20T09:12:30","slug":"haven-hell-hospitality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.belly.net.au\/?p=2560","title":{"rendered":"haven, hell, hospitality"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The bayfm subscriber drive continues, this year it is a celebration of the local.\u00a0 At bayfm we have presenters, guests, volunteers, music, stories from all over the world.\u00a0 But we also very much do our best to link up this community, often with the help of this wonderful global linking tool, the internet.\u00a0 So you can now listen to us, and many local stations, from all over the world.\u00a0 But only on community radio stations can you hear the stories that are considered too small, too hidden, too local for national media.\u00a0 And every day hear interviews with all sorts of\u00a0 people in your community.\u00a0 This Monday I am very happy to bring you a man who grew up in Queensland, spent a lot of years of cooking &amp; crazyness in Sydney &amp; Brisbane, then cooked some more, &amp; turned his life around,here in Northern NSW, and is now writing and teaching others to write.\u00a0 Jim Hearn&#8217;s first book, &#8220;High Season: a memoir of heroin and hospitality&#8221; was launched a few weeks ago in Byron Bay, and he was a guest at the 2012 Byron Bay Writers Festival.\u00a0 He is also a scriptwriter and lecturer at Southern Cross University in Lismore.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2563\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.belly.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/hearn_web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2563\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2563 \" title=\"Jim Hearn\" src=\"http:\/\/www.belly.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/hearn_web.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.belly.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/hearn_web.jpg 250w, http:\/\/www.belly.net.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/hearn_web-140x150.jpg 140w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2563\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jim Hearn<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>BIOGRAPHY<\/strong> :\u00a0 reprinted by permission from the Byron Bay Writers Festival site.<\/p>\n<p>Jim Hearn is a researcher, writer and chef. As a chef, Jim has worked in commercial kitchens for over twenty years. He started life as an apprentice chef at fifteen years of age. As a writer, Jim wrote and produced four films that screened on SBS as well as worked on the screenplay for Chopper and an adaption of Andrew McGahan\u2019s novel Last Drinks. Jim wrote High Season: a memoir of Heroin and Hospitality, after he quit his job as head chef at Rae\u2019s on Watego\u2019s in Byron Bay and enrolled in the writing program at Southern Cross University as a mature-age student. Louise Thurtell picked up the manuscript for High Season through Allen &amp; Unwin\u2019s Friday pitch session.
